Select an area of interest for valuable information on getting the most from your Security Technologies system.

Q. Will my alarm system be affected by an upgrade to our phone service or telephone system?

A. Yes!  If you are having a new phone system installed and the premise wiring changed, notify us after completion.   Our involvement may be as simple as testing the system to make certain that the phone lines are seizing properly.   This means that, when the alarm system is activated, all premise phones should shut off, allowing the signal to transmit to our Central Station.   Also, if your new system or change in service requires dialing 9 first to access an outside line, the system program will have to be changed.

Q. Can a DSL line affect my alarm system?

A. Yes! To interface the alarm system with the DSL line and avoid any problems, a special filter has to be installed on the alarm panel.   If this filter is not installed, your alarm system may not properly report to our Central Monitoring Station.   And, you could experience erratic operation and false alarms.  With the filter installed, the alarm system works in concert with the DSL line without any problems whatsoever.  You can obtain this special filter from us for under $50.00 and usually install it yourself.   The special filter is not currently available from your telephone company.

Q. When is a good time to change the batteries in your home smoke detector?

A. The first of the year represents an excellent benchmark for changing these batteries.

    We recommend that you . . .

     1. Predate your calendar for this procedure.

     2. Use only alkaline batteries.

     3. Test the detectors after the change.

Q. Should I test my system?  How often?

A. Yes!  Even though we use state-of-the-art equipment that has been field proven to provide years of trouble-free operation, Security Technologies still recommends that you test your system at least once a month.   Unexpected problems can arise from such occurrences as lightning damage, a change in your telephone service or wiring, or recent renovations and remodeling.   To test your monitored system, first, contact our Central Monitoring Station and advice them of your plans.   A passcode will be required.   Then, arm your system as normal.  Wait three minutes and activate a sensor (open door, walk in front of a motion detector, etc.).   Your system should alarm immediately or within 45 seconds.   Disarm the system and notify us that your test has been completed.

Q. Can spiders or spider webs cause my motion detectors to false alarm?

A. Yes!  Although newer motion detectors (those manufactured within the past three years) are more immune to spiders and spider webs, we still recommend, as a general rule, that you check your motion detectors periodically.   Remove any webs that you find near these detectors.   This will help eliminate false alarms.

Q. What can cause my motion detectors to false alarm?

A. Typically, motion detectors have been proven to be extremely reliable and immune to false alarms.   However, certain objects can create the conditions that a motion detector requires before it activates.  As a general rule, we recommend that you keep any moving object at least 15 feet from the detectors.   These include such objects as metallic balloons, metallic tinsel, hanging advertising banners and, of course, holiday treetops and ornaments.
